  • Water can severely damage timber so simply avoid it at all costs.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, to avoid drying the timber out and fading stain.
  • Avoid temperature fluctuating and keep timber furniture away from the likes of fireplaces, as this could lead to splitting of timber.

DANGEROUS OBJECTS

Timber furniture has a beautiful natural appearance, and the lacquer finish offers a certain amount of protection from everyday use, however it can’t withstand severe treatment, so be gentle. Sharp edges and abrasive and uneven surfaces can scratch or leave unsightly marks on timber.

Hot items, such as cups of coffee, tea, etc., food serving dishes and even hot pizza boxes can leave permanent blemishes.
Protect the surface with coasters, place mats, tablecloths and other covers that resist heat transfer from hot items.

REGULAR CARE

Timber furniture is generally easy to maintain, which adds to its appeal.

Dust regularly with a feather duster, treated or lint-free cloth, lambs wool duster or towelling.

Only use cleaning products made specifically for hardwoods, and never use water or harsh all-purpose cleaners.

Avoid covering timber furniture for long periods, as the cover material may hold in moisture that can lead to warping and wood rot. An application of beeswax every six months will help to prevent the timber from warping and splitting. It will also nourish the timber, bringing out its natural beauty.

SPILLS

Naturally Timber furniture has a water-resistant lacquer finish that helps to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood, but it can’t protect against large spills.

If moisture penetrates the lacquer, it’s likely to seep inside the timber and make it warp, blister and swell. This is not only unsightly, but it also affects the timber’s strength.

Use a soft cloth to clean up spills as quickly as possible to avoid damaging the finish. Blot up the liquid rather than wiping, which spreads it further.

Liquids that can damage wood should never be placed on or around timber furniture. They include:

  • nail polish;
  • acetone (eg. nail polish remover);
  • methylated spirit;
  • marker pen ink;
  • fragrant oils;
  • glue and general cleaning products, especially those containing silicone
