Why do we finish timber furniture?

For numerous reasons. The most important is it slows down the exchange of moisture in the air and the timber. It also creates a barrier to prevent dirt and dust contaminating the timber.

When we finish timber it accentuates the natural features of the timber.

These days we often prefer to lacquer our timber furniture with a spray gun as it provides a tough durable finish. It provides superior protection against dirt/ stains and water, than previously used finishes such as French polishing.

Waxing can be done using a variety of methods, it is one of the best finishes in my opinion. It absolutely draws out timber attributes and allows timber to develop a patina with age.
